Electric or Gas?

2/9/02

I guess you might say I'm a bit biased, naturally gas powered power equipment is better for me then electric. Point here is for those of you who are considering electric power for purposes of clean air. Don't be to quick doing your part for the environment by going out and buying an electric powered mower, blower, or trimmer.

No argument with those who do so for the simple plug in and go and who have small yards where gas powered may be more hassle then an electric. The electrics or battery powered machines have their place.

For those who think electric machines are cleaner though, that's not always true. Depends. If your electric producer is generating power with hydro, OK, you win. If not, take a look at this.

Ugly isn't it? Real easy to see the downwind haze created. The best view I didn't even get. Saw this driving back to Vegas from Mesquite and my first view showed the whole valley on the downwind side in a thick haze. It wasn't possible to pull off the freeway at that moment so I missed the better shot. This is a power plant north of Las Vegas. Pollutes the Moapa valley pretty regularly. You may not see this filth in your town, but somewhere there's a power plant supplying electricity to you, and if it ain't hydro, it may be pumping out this puke on someone. Think about it.
