This repair covers replacement of broken ropes in Quantum Power Briggs engines. If the spring or pulley are broken or damaged, you might be better off letting a repair shop handle the repair.
First there is a plastic deco shroud which doubles as the fuel tank. Mark (masking tape wrapped around works well) the position of the throttle cable where it clamps to the engine. This is real important to get your throttle control back to spec easily, especially if you have a choke carb rather than a primer carb.
There's a top center grid that comes off first. Later models have three plastic spring clips, press in and up and the grid will remove. Early versions have two 1/4" hex screws to remove. Next will be three 5/16 hex screws holding the plastic shroud to the main engine shroud, these will be below the just removed grid.. Remove them.
Next, same side as the air filter, to the left and under the tank is a 3/8 shoulder bolt, remove it. This bolt passes through a fuel tank ear, behind is a spacer, don't lose or forget to put the spacer back in when re-installing.
Remove the dip-stick. Now the tank/deco housing should lift straight up. Slowly, as soon as you can, lay it over to the side carefully to avoid removing the fuel line.
Now you have the main engine shroud with the recoil attached. Clean the dip-stick tube where it plugs into the block. Remove the 5/16 screw retaining the tube to the engine housing. Lift just enough for the bracket nub to clear and turn the tube 180° so it's clear of the housing. If the tube pops loose from the engine, just push it back in. That's the why for cleaning before, to prevent all that acculmuated grit from dropping into the engine.
Now you have four 3/8 bolts to free the housing from the engine. Lift the housing off and set it upside down on the bench. Extract any remaining rope from the pulley. You shouldn't need to remove the pulley or mess with the spring if all you have is a broken rope.
Remembering you're lookng at it up side down. Turn the pulley counter clock wise. Get both hands in there and wind it until it stops. There are sharp edges on the housing so be carefull but at the same time keep a good grip on the pulley as you wind the spring by turning the pulley.
When you can go no more, (don't jam it) look for the hole in both the pulley and housing for the rope. Back off the pulley at least 1/2 turn, if needed make another turn, until the two holes align. Stick a small screw driver between the pulley spokes and the housing grid to hold in place.
Now you need a rope. #4 starter rope, 8 foot of it. Off the bulk rope spool at the shop it's part #390619. 5 foot will go into the pulley and three foot will hang out to extend up to the operators handle.
Burn/melt the end of the rope and shape to a stub point. Feed the rope from outside the housing through the housing hole and pulley hole. Tie a single tight knot. Tie a slip knot about 3 foot from the opposite end. Grab the rope, pull the screw driver and let the rope retract to the slip knot. You can tie the grip on after all else is assembled.
It ain't that hard once you've done a few, patience is really important the first time. Try to arrange it so you won't be bothered or annoyed by distractions and you ought to do fine.
