Most mowers are too cheap to intall adjustable cables for their controls. Honda is one of the few that does. When it comes to drive and Blade Brake Clutch(BBC) control cables, keeping them adjusted correctly will lead to a much longer life of the mechanism they operate. These adjustments are on the upper handle, just below the control lever. Tools needed, 2, 10mm open end wrench's.
It real simple, keep the slack adjusted out of the cable. There is a section of the inner cable that spans from the adjustment area to the control lever. Periodically, just press on it with your fingers and look and feel for slop. There should be none, just enough so that when the control lever is released, the mechanism will disengage. Failure to keep adjusted means the mechanism will not fully engage with the proper pressure and cause rapid wear. Pre-mature wear out of BBC parts or drive transmission will occur and repair/replacement can get expensive. My estimate is that about half the failures are due to not keeping the cable adjusted properly.
There are 2 10mm nuts on the control cables which secure them to the adjusting bracket. Loosen the retainer nuts so you can pull the outer cable away from the control lever until slack is removed, then tighten the nuts. Its simple, EZ and will make your equipment last a lot longer.
